I am Lisa Buchanan – wife, mother, photographer, sewer, creator, business owner, landlord, property manager, volunteer, quilter, beach walker, nature lover, day-tripper, day-dreamer and the owner of the sweetest dog named Pippa.
I also have PKD (Polycystic Kidney Disease) and PLD (Polycystic Liver Disease). My liver is a mass of cysts that takes up a lot of room in my abdomen. However, my liver function is fine. My kidneys, on the other hand, are almost 3 times the size of a normal kidney and are deteriorating. I was recently told by my nephrologist that I could be on dialysis in 1 to 2 years. My disease is hereditary so I have known my whole life that eventually dialysis or a transplant would be in my future. But still…it’s shocking to hear that what you knew was coming is closer than you planned.
There is lots to think about, prepare for and do before I actually start dialysis. There will be good days and not so good days, creative days and relaxing days, energetic days and taxing days. This is my place to document my journey and to give myself permission to create, write and share whatever I learn, feel, experience, makes me happy or even sad. It is my hope that in some small way it may help others who may be in the same or similar situation.
Life is a journey, not a destination.
